The semester is coming to an end and I know at least on the cornerstone end we are all very excited to be graduating. As we graduate, it is necessary to start looking for jobs and right about now is when we find out if our degrees really meant something. So what about you? Have you guys started to see how your interdisciplinary degree has influenced your personal life? Tell us a little about your professional history and how your degree has been useful integrating it.

It is truly necessary to start to think about your career options and start marketing yourself now because when your in our place, it will be too late! And it will come sooner than you think!

So identify what you think are your strongest and weakest job skills and what you can do to improve on those skills.

What professional clubs or organizations can help you in your chosen careers? (pick two)

Also, what about volunteering, internships, or extern-ships? Does anything seem promising or do you have an interest in?

For me volunteering with Florida Hospital's Children Hospital has given my resume and my commitment to my future career a great boost. It helped me narrow down exactly what I wanted to do and gave me relative experience and a great letter of recommendation. PPMS and AMSA has also helped put a big boost on my job track showing me this volunteer opportunity as well as a network of other students giving me valuable advice and markers for where I should be.

How have your career goals altered over time?

I started out wanting to be a veterinarian and when I got into shadowing I figured out that it just wasn't right for me. But even bad experience is good experience. At least you know what you DON'T want to do.

Personally I spent 2 years of my college career working for with veterinarians and getting experience in veterinary medicine. I graduated a year early, so as you can see my resume was definitely lacking in relative Pediatric care related fields. However, most employers don't care that you changed your mind, they care that your dedicated! So get experience in all forms, good or bad. At least you'll be able to say, well I thought I wanted to do this but I changed my mind and now THIS is where I want to be. They will see from your previous hard work that you are right for them. College is about figuring out who you are they understand that.

Finally, what is your personal philosophy in your professional life and how is (or isn't) it interdisciplinary? Try to describe yourself in 15 words or less. (it can be over) If you don't like it, chances are an employer won't like it either.

My fifteen words or less is...

I am a future ambitious pediatric surgeon, who genuinely cares for her patients. My thirteen words tell employers that I am determined at becoming a pediatrician and am caring. Pediatrics stems from medicine and sciences, my Life and Biomedical Sciences core and Chemistry Minor. Caring resembles my Humanities core concentration on ethical principle.

This quote, with a few minor changes, will get me through my career in all steps because to shows me my goals and dedication in the long run and why I am doing what I'm doing now in the short run.

Good Luck in your future endeavors! It has been a pleasure blogging with you!

P.S. Try to get your responses in early so you won't have to worry about this and the F word! FINALS!

  1. I am a driven individual who loves to help children get better and healthier

This is interdisciplinary because i have learned to combine my core major of biomedical sciences and social services with my minor of health science. So, i believe my social service major will help me understand children better while my health science minor will help me know better what could potentially be wrong with them, so i can assist them faster.

  2. I'm an aspiring doctor because caring for others is its own reward for me

Interdisciplinarity comes into play because caring for others doesn’t just involve the hard sciences. It is an endeavor that encompasses health and wellness, and takes a broader scope than any one discipline could.

  3. I am a member of pre-med AMSA (American Medical Society). I currently hold the Director of Community and Environmental Health position. Another professional organization I am interested in, but not a member of is IMO (International Medical Outreach). I am scheduled to start volunteering at Shepherd's Hope Clinic downtown next month, so that will be beneficial experience. I need to find a physician to begin shadowing, preferably a D.O.

My career goals have altered from: Mechanical engineering to English Education to Pre-Med. I believe I am on the correct track. I am very excited for my future endeavors of medical school.

    My fifteen words or less:
I am a future osteopathic gastroenterologist, who genuinely cares for the health, the most basic need, of all people.

I believe that all people innately deserve a right to good health, the most basic need. My science education provides the basic foundations for a future medical career, while my other humanities classes provide me with a unique worldview into the understanding of other cultures.

  4. I work at the UCF arena, which helped me to gain more communication skills that will benefit me in the long run when I have to talk to my patients, I also work at the YMCA extended day care program which is helping me to interact with children and understand how they think, so when I specialize in pediatrics I will know how to interact with the children on a different level.

My strongest job skill is I have a lot of patience with children. My weakest job skill is I have a low tolerance for disrespect, I can work on that by realizing I have to be the bigger person and set the guidelines for respect.

I believe AMSA (american medical student association) and MAPS (multi-cultural association of pre-health students) will benefit me greatly in my chosen path to become a physician assistant.

I volunteer at FL Hospital and I love interacting with the patients, I have also volunteered at a women and children's shelter, a children's home, and nursing home, and I especially liked working with children, I have a passion for helping all people, but my heart is in working with children.

My career goal have not altered to far, I wanted to become a Pediatrician, and now I want to become a Physician Assistant specializing in Pediatrics so it's not to far off.

I am a future Physician Assistant. I plan to specialize in Pediatrics. I love children and I have a big heart to help the little one's in need. I am focused, driven, and a great leader, I plan to achieve great things.

Interdisciplinarity is involved in all areas of my profession because I plan to care for my patients and help with the health care management aspects as well.

I agree with you completely, as i am an aspiring physician assistant and its not only just about the hard sciences as you have mentioned but also about the health and wellness, you are so right

    @erin Chandler
I really like your 15 words or less view, and i agree with you, everyone does deserve basic healthcare needs, so definitely your majors mesh well and looks to be a promising future.

  7. As far as my past professional history is concerned, the best thing that I have to mention is the current job that I have in the emergency department as well as my leadership
experience with my organization-MAPS. Ultimately I want to attend med school, but I have anxieties about the thought mainly because I don't have the best grades. Also, I here so many of my friends talk about how they have been waitlisted!!! Soooo, before I sell my soul away I have decided to take some time off to accomplish multiple things. Primarily I want to relax and have some cultural education and exposure in Europe, but I simultaneously want to create more career avenues for myself. So, I am in the process of figuring out exactly what I want to independently research and I'm very close to finding a sponsor to help me take it on. The topic is on healthcare and socialized medicine-If anyone would like to be a a part of it just let me know!!! The other options that I have would be to see if I can intern or shadow a doctor while I'm over there, and I am also considering medical journalism. I am very glad to say that thanks to this class all of these options have become apparent to me :)

My Weakest professional attribute is procrastination, so I am considering getting an agenda for my last summer here!

My professional philosphy is that as long as you keep an open mind there is something to be
    learned everyday.

My fifteen word or less: I am an aspiring doctor, who hopes to change the lives of many
    with my healing abilities.

  8. These are all really great! The best part is that you can begin to see a well defined path that will lead you to your goals instead of a blur in the dirt that it started out to be.

@Lellington27 I have the same aspirations that you do except I am doing DNP. It's such a great career path isn't it? :)

  9. @ Benjamin

I think this is a great idea for an interdisciplinary field. I don't know what classes you have taken for social services but if you can add Developmental Psychology to your class load, I believe it would be very interesting and beneficial to your future endeavors.

    @ Andrea

I think taking some time off is a wise decision, especially since you do not feel completely ready to take the difficult, tedious endeavor that is Medical School. Medical journalism is an interesting field, you must have specific technical knowledge of the field and write to appease the medical crowd. Procrastination is not a good flaw to have, future doctors need to be on top of their game, I highly suggest Google Calendars and an agenda.

  10. @spetree it is, i'm very excited! I have to look into the DNP path it sounds interesting!

@andreaG I agree procrastination is one thing that sets a lot of us back! I work on mines everyday, I use a dry erase board calender to help me out and it works very well for me!

  11. I am a persistent individual that works very hard to achieve goals set by myself.
I hope to one day be a successful Optometrist that can effectively help those with improper eyesight. My fifteen words come remotely close as to how hard I work to achieve my goals also that I am not afraid of challenges that lie ahead. Anybody that knows me knows that I am not at all afraid of challenges and that I look forward to them.

I really like how you emphasize ALL peopele, I volunteer at a free clinic that serves the uninsured. There is definitely a need for more doctors with that philosophy

    @ Andrea
I love your philosophy, I have a wall in my room I write "wise words" I come across, and at the top I have a saying almost identical to yours: "Have the eyes to see what can be learned from everyday"

  13. I am a caretaker; a compassionate individual with a sharp mind for business management integrating these in a medical setting is my current passion. I want to make a difference by improving availability of well visits, specialty referrals, acute care and generally more accessible healthcare for all Americans through universal healthcare. My weakest job skill is timeliness; I am chronically and dependably 5-10 minutes late for everything, always. My strength in regards to job skills would be my ability to self-start and require little to no supervision, I stay on task and get the job done. I would love to volunteer or do an internship but my paid position and most important job as mother to a 3 and 5 year old prevent me from any extracurricular activities. I try to spend every spare second with the kids.

  14. @ Everyone,

It is very exciting to blog with the future of modern medicine. I wish you all success and hope you remember your ideals. Do not forget why you are getting into medicine. Do not get boggled down by patient load, hospital politics and greed. Keep these hopeful promising words you all have just written and look back at them in 15 years. Stay true to your goals and patients!

I think its great that you are getting experience with children now. Power to you for choosing that feild. It can be heart breaking.

    @Shannon

I like your aspirations! They are so relevant to the direction that health care is going in, especially with the expansion of medicaid! We have similar personality traits :)If I find out that I need a UCF student affiliate I will let you know.

  17. My career plans have done almost a full circle since last semester. I was originally A Business Administration Major student. However, when i found out the IDS can provide me a minor in Business and allow me to take the pre-med sciences for medical it gave me a better opportunity. Before college i wanted to study biomedical enginerring but got pushed to business by parents. However, i changed it because i knew i can do better something in which i can help people which is something i always do. My reamainig courses are all sciences which are challenging and fun at the same time. Later on my career my minor on Business can help me when i open my private practice.

  18. To describe my self in 15 words seems to be kind of hard for me as i have so much to offer. Well i can say that i am individual that will surpass your expectations by using my experience and educational background.

    @ Everyone

This semester flew by quickly and i would like to wish everyone the best in their future career plans and success. In a few years we could be looking back at this blog and posts and remember why we are doing our careers. I really enjoyed blogging with all of you and would like to know more so just sent a request on Facebook. I would like to end this blog with a quote that has a lot of meaning and inspiration to all
